Books can be used in an internal competition

The third book briefs of Valéry Giscard d'Estaing, "The power and life", last weekend. the book of François Fillon, "The France can withstand the truth," of next Thursday. Seven months of the presidential election, even the rentrée littéraire is earned by the political fever. The two works are very expected, allowing the two men to settle their accounts with Jacques Chirac. They also speak of a tradition that resists the development of the Internet and to the supremacy of television: a responsible for political, write a fact book figure of forced passage. It is even further for an applicant to the Supreme bench.

These last twelve months, not less than seven candidates or nominated candidates are already engaged in the exercise: Nicolas Sarkozy, Lionel Jospin, Dominique Strauss-Kahn, François Hollande, Jack Lang, Corinne Lepage, Philippe de Villiers. And at least as much prepare, François Bayrou to Arlette Laguiller, Ségolène Royal and Nicolas Dupont-Aignan. But not Jean-Marie Le Pen, who says, better ask victim, faces "a widespread refusal" publishers.

Presence in the media

Nicolas Sarkozy has put the bar very high. His book, "Testimony", is sold at about 230,000 best according to its editor Bernard Fixot (outpatients according to the Institute GfK, the UMP displaying sales 328.000 works to booksellers). A rare performance for a French book of political, even though it remains far from the one million copies of "Democracy", written by Giscard in 1976.

To let, the motivations are different. Russian political and incidental financial copyright vary from 12 to 15 of the price of the book. It may be to clarify thinking, create a proximity to establish credibility. Or, simply, to exist. "Write a book, it's back in the debate," said Lionel Jospin to the publication of "the world as I see it". Writing him served pretext for an intense presence in the media and then in a tour of the Socialist strongholds. François Bayrou provides, he published two books, in October and in early 2007. "Unlike a television show, even successful, a book marks in depth," wants to believe Philippe de Villiers, who, after his book on Islamists, prepares to speak of the "climate drift."

For others, publish a book is to correct an image. This is the case of Nicolas Sarkozy, who tried to "humanize" before the (US) readers. It is also that of Jack Lang, who wanted to end its "flakes" profile in to Slacker on the "fiscal revolution." In vain. The image correction is to handle with caution. Laurent Fabius warned the cooking memories: he who wanted to put an end to its reputation of coldness and arrogance admitted in 2003, in "It begins with a stroll", his taste for the Star' HQ and the carrot. And not that skepticism and jeers.

"It is not ready."

Books can be used in an internal competition. Because it was "important to be present ideologically" in the final phase of the Socialist project, François Hollande has opted for an interview with Edwy Plenel book. Dominique Strauss-Kahn chose a "log" to sweep "all topics", for the most serious to the lightest. Is this as decisive for in electoral competition "This account more through the opening it to the TV for the sales themselves", admits DSK. Remains the case Ségolène Royal, who invented the virtual book. Many times announced, he was repeatedly delayed. The chapters were to be published regularly on his website, but nothing since June and Chapter 2 of the 35 hours that sparked an outcry at the PS. "It is not ready", said a close. Get out a book is not a requirement for everyone.
