Bush is still the tenant of the White House

George w. Bush is still the tenant of the White House. But the press in its vast majority did not wait his departure, January 20, 2009, to a great reconciliation between America and the world. The "soft power" American is back. At least to a certain extent, because many newspapers recall, first of all, the challenges facing the next President.

But the election of 4 November of an African-American as 44th President of the United States has nevertheless attracted a huge hope for "a new America", of the arrival of "a world healer", according to the "Hindustan Times", of a "yankee perestroika" for the Lebanese "the Orient day" newspaper, of a world "at the dawn of a new era", according to the Israeli "Haaretz." For his part, "Granma", the organ of the Cuban Communist Party, delivers event education clearly more limited, but very practical. For him, the American election especially "buried the hegemony of the Cuban mafia in Miami on the State of Florida".

But, where George Bush's America was unable to impose democracy by force of arms, that of Barack Obama it is exported by the result of the vote. "By giving an overwhelming victory to the first African-American President in its history, America is already a different country," wrote the editorialist of the "Times of India". What fascinates for its part "the hindustan times", it is only to elect a Barack Obama, is like electing a Muslim Prime Minister in India. And the message of hope for the US election for this emerging power is clear: "the Indian democracy becoming more adult, this possibility is more an oddity."

The tone is quite different in the other great rising power of the 21st century, China, where the lesson of American democracy is not in the centre of the concerns. Far from it. The "China Daily", a daily English-language newspaper controlled by the State, recalled the need for further "strategic dialogue and trade and economic negotiations at a very high level" between the two countries. Using the best Chinese dialectics to address his threat to elected us President, the China daily said that "more than 1.3 billion Chinese in China and around the world hope that President Obama will continue to update a constructive role to facilitate more friendly dialogue between mainland China and the island of Taiwan". The official journal, "Beijing News" redoubt "on the issue of food security Obama to China's attitude is more intransigent than that of the Bush administration", even if he considers that, fundamentally, things won't change much. Yet, what is concerned above all the Japanese press, is an America that relies more on China to carry out its policy in Asia, as noted by the "Yomiuri". The other worry of the economic newspaper "nikkei", is an America more protectionist with the Democrats to the White House and majority in both houses of Congress.

Because, beyond Obamamania, global phenomenon, the harsh reality of the world takes all its rights. In the aftermath of the threatening speech from President Dmitry Medvedev, Russian newspapers are stingy comments. In a perfume of cold war, the newspaper "izvestia", near the power, simply pays tribute "to the active role of the forces of progress of America, and above all its youth, its intellectual elite, regardless of the colour of the skin.

The competitor "kommersant", very factual with a paper of his Special Envoy in Chicago under the title "they just did it" (they did), prefer to shower the hopes of the world. "The international experience of Obama is not so great", he notes.

Yet, at the close and Middle East, it is a fragile glimmer of hope for a better relationship which prevails in the press, even in Iran. "The world has breathed a sigh relief collective because its candidate won the US presidential election", wrote "The Tehran Times". And why, wondered the Iranian newspaper, is the "candidate of the world" Because, simply, he felt that will talk with him. "After years of arrogance, of intolerance, of unilateralism of the Bush administration, it is a breath of fresh air." In Iraq, it is more prudent. The Shia "Badr" notes that "the United States are not Djibouti or Somalia" and that they "do not change strategy as soon as they change their President". Many newspapers in Baghdad believe indeed that Barack Obama not implement not issue the recent progress made on the security front by a hasty departure American troops.

But there is the other major conflict in the Middle East between Israelis and Palestinians, where number of players have criticized the Bush administration not to be sufficiently engaged in the peace process.

"mazal tov" (congratulations), wrote the "Jerusalem Post", which said that more than three-quarters of American Jews voted for Obama, 53 of Catholics, but 45 of protestants. Between the lines, the Israeli newspaper reminds nevertheless elected President that the américano-israélienne relationship "is greater than any spirit of party" and that the new administration will soon discover that "person more than Israel does want peace."

Glimmer of hope, just before the election of 4 November, the "Palestine Chronicle", published in the United States, recalled that the arabo-américaine community (approximately 3.5 million people) was mostly declared in Barack Obama. The change is very clear among American voters favorable to Bush in 2000, Muslim, but brought their support to the Democratic candidate this year, according to the media.

In Europe, if all newspapers welcomed the election of Barack Obama, the time is already in queries. After the "Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, Obama is still much"a blank sheet. "We do not know what it wants", commented on "Die welt". "How will he decide", questioned the "Süddeutsche Zeitung". For "a rapid or slow to Iraq withdrawal." Direct talks with the Iran or the games of tactical statements "For the Italian daily"Il Sole 24 Ore", the reality is already on the idealism. His priority will be "aid to the US industry", wrote. The essence, as stated a few days ago the English newspaper "the guardian", it is the Obama balloon inflates too much. "Otherwise, as in the stock market, the crash of the Obama action will hit hard". The international press is already responsible for him recalled.
